He received his medical degree from the Faculty of Medicine of Semmelweis University of Medicine in 1996. In 2001, he began his PhD studies at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Debrecen, as a Young Investigator in an EU FP5 consortium. He defended his doctoral dissertation in December 2005 with summa cum laude distinction. The title of his dissertation was Epigenetic Regulation of Hormonal Response. Between 2006 and 2009, he was a member of László Nagy’s research group. Subsequently, until 2018, he served as the Laboratory Director of the Genomic Medicine and Bioinformatics Service Laboratory. Under his leadership, Illumina sequencing technologies were introduced in Debrecen. He also played a key role in the successful implementation of ChIP-seq technologies.
His main research interests are epigenetics and functional genomics, with a particular focus on data analysis and data integration. The physical carriers of epigenetic inheritance regulate gene expression at the chromatin level, his research aims to understand and exploit chromatin-level mechanisms of gene-expression regulation in the development and treatment of cancer.
Under his supervision, three PhD candidates have successfully obtained their doctoral degrees. He has also supervised 28 student research projects, three of which received awards at the Hungarian National Scientific Students’ Associations Conference (OTDK).
He has twice been awarded the Szodoray Fellowship, once the Magyary Zoltán Fellowship, and once the János Bolyai Research Scholarship. He has served as principal investigator in two OTKA-funded research projects and as a participating researcher in eight additional OTKA-funded projects. He has organized several ELIXIR bioinformatics and training courses at the University of Debrecen. He was a co-founder of the Danube Epigenetics Conference series and served as an organizer of the conferences held in 2012, 2014, 2016, and 2018.
Since 2017, he has been a board-certified specialist in medical laboratory diagnostics. Since 2022, he has served as Chief Medical Officer of Hajdú-Bihar County, Hungary.
